5 Doctoral Scholarships in Public Economics
The Department of Public Economics at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law invites outstanding graduates in Economics or other relevant subjects (e.g. Physics, Mathematics) to apply for the Department’s PhD scholarship program.
The main research fields are:
- Tax Incidence
- Fiscal Policy
- International and Federal Tax Competition
- Political Economy of Taxation and Redistribution
Successful applicants receive a scholarship from the Max Planck Society and participate in the Graduate School of Economics (MGSE). The MGSE is the doctoral program of the Department of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich. The program’s course load typically is five classes in first year and one class in the second year.
All PhD students receive a scholarship and are integrated into the international team of researchers at the institute. The participation in conferences, symposia and seminars for further training is strongly supported. Additional resources to conduct experiments or acquire data sets can be granted.
Usually scholarships are granted for a period of 3 years.
Successful applicants
- are interested in research on international fiscal competition and/or on Political Economy of taxation and redistribution
- join an international research team with a clear focus on Public Economics
- join an international research environment in Public Economics and Tax Law with excellent research facilities in the heart of Europe
- join the Ph.D.-program at the Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE)

Generally, we can consider only applications that are complete, i.e., include all relevant material.
Necessary requirements are:
- A completed university degree in Economics or neighbouring disciplines;
- For dissertations projects: admission requirements of the doctoral program of the Department of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (Munich Graduate School of Economics - MGSE);
- GRE-test.
